Boca do Inferno or the “mouth of hell” in Portuguese, is a striking cliff formation located a few miles west of the Cascais marina. It’s a beautiful place to stroll around, take in the ocean scenery, or savor seafood by the water.
This article will cover exactly how to get to Boca Inferno from Cascais, things to do nearby, and the best time to visit.
Here’s everything to know before visiting the beautiful Boca do Inferno in Cascais.

How To Get To Boca Inferno
Boca Inferno is only a 15 minute walk from the Cascais marina, or a 25-30 minute walk from the Cascais train station.
If you don’t want to walk, it’s easily accessible by taking the 427 bus from the train station, or a short taxi ride that should cost no more than €5.
I took the 427 bus from the Cascais train station, and got to Boca do Inferno in 10 minutes. This bus can be found at the bus stop, right next to the Cascais train station.
There’s two different bus stops right next to the train station, just down the street from another. If you can’t find the correct numbered bus, ask a nearby bus driver, and they’ll make sure you’re on the right street.
The 427 bus does a loop from the Cascais train station to Boca do inferno, and leaves every 15 minutes. It makes a few stops, with one directly in front of Boca do Inferno, and you can hop on this same bus stop to get back to town. You can buy tickets directly from the bus driver in cash, and I only paid around €2 for a single ride.

At Boca do Inferno, there’s a cafe, restaurant, and a few shops. To get to the actual viewpoint, walk through the shops, then on the right you’ll see the massive sea arch.

This sea arch was formed through years of waves eroding the limestone cliff walls.

If you wait around for a few minutes, you’ll start to understand why it’s given the name “hell’s mouth”! It has a dramatic view of the waves crashing along the cliff walls, especially if you’re visiting during high tide.

Things To Do Nearby
After watching the waves crash over Boca do Inferno, savor seafood at the popular Mar do Inferno restaurant. This is a fine-dining seafood restaurant steps away from the viewpoint that has outdoor seating with a beautiful ocean view.
There’s also a cafe, souvenir shop, and small snack bar at Boca do Inferno. Beyond the viewpoint itself, there’s miles of rugged coastline that you can stroll along to soak up views of the ocean.

It has well-paved walkways, and I saw many locals going for a morning run around this area.
From Boca do Inferno, it’s only a 15 minute walk east to reach the Cascais marina, where you can see the Condes de Castro Museum, Santa Maria Museum, or Citadel of Cascais.
It’s also only a 20 minute walk west to reach the Guia lighthouse, and Casa de Guia shopping mall. Here are some places worth checking out that are within walking distance to Boca do Inferno:
- Cascais Marina (15 min): Beautiful marina lined with cafes, restaurants, and museums
- Museu Condes de Castro (15 min): 1900s revivalist-style palace and mansion museum by the marina

Best Time To Visit Boca Inferno
I recommend visiting Boca do Inferno on a sunny day so you can go for a long walk, and enjoy views of the ocean scenery.
I visited on a rainy day, so it was extremely windy and not ideal for walking around. But if you want to enjoy dramatic views of the waves crashing, visit on a stormy day when the tide’s high!
Summary
Boca do Inferno is a unique attraction, and the perfect place to go to enjoy ocean scenery, or savor seafood by the water.
It’s only a 15 minute walk from the Cascais marina, or a 10 minute ride on the 427 bus, so it’s definitely worth checking out.
