The best place to stay in Hvar is in Hvar Town or Stari Grad, which are the two main ferry ports. These small towns are within a 30 minute drive of another, and well connected by bus.
Hvar Town is the main ferry port, and city center. It’s the best place to arrive if you’re not bringing a car, since the car ferries arrive only in Stari Grad.

From the ferry port, it’s a 15-20 minute walk (or short bus ride) to reach Stari Grad’s city center. If you don’t want to walk, there’s a public bus that will take you to the city center, and taxis readily available in the marina.
The last ferry port is Jelsa, which is 15 minutes east of Stari Grad, and right next to Vrboska, another small local town. Jelsa and Vrboska are lesser touristy towns with wineries and a more authentic feel.
These are nice towns to visit, but it’s best to stay in Stari Grad, as it has the best hotel options.
